No one can ever tell you your future. They can only tell you something that might have happened if they told you nothing.

Clean Alternatives Problems

Got the domain notforairplay.com. Should be switching over smoothly from the old subdomain site.

So I had this idea of listing clean alternatives to explicit songs (an example is on Stronger - Kanye West's page). Basically, it looks for tracks with the same artist and starting name that have the clean flag. So it works on the example, but just ran into an instance where it doesn't work (Gin & Juice (Laid Back remix) - Snoop Doggy Dogg feat. Dat Nigga Daz should be listing Gin & Juice (Laid Back radio mix) - Snoop Doggy Dogg feat. Dat Nigga Daz, but because radio is before mix, it doesn't pick up automatically). Wanted to keep it simple, but looks like I have to build more relationships in the database.

Oh well.

Lunch Time/Late Night Project

So I've been working on Not For Airplay for the past few days. I'm not sure how I feel about the set up yet, it might drastically change, or get worse, who knows? Not sure if the database schema is all there yet either, been tinkering with it and I don't like it at all.

Piggybacking off of MusicBrainz's mbid as unique identifiers.

Giving Disqus another shot.

Have a weird way of verifying statuses with Last.fm. The idea sounded cool at first, but in practice, I'm not quite sure yet.

Then again, it's only been a few days since I started. Not bad?

Dr. Dog - Live at Tabernacle - September 19, 2006

Still listening to old live recordings lately, trying to get rid of all these CDRs I used to collect by copying them to external hard drives. I couldn't find the setlist easily for this recording, so posting it here for future reference:

  • Say Something
  • Fools Life
  • Oh No
  • Easy Beat
  • Pretender
  • Worst Trip
  • Ain't It Strange
  • The World May Never Know
  • Die, Die, Die
  • Today
  • Wake Up

Trying to figure out how to cleanly get local timezone to work in Planet

Recently started using Planet again, and was surprised that the times were all in UTC.

So far, I made the following changes in __init__.py to get it to display in the server's timezone.:

Added import calendar with the rest of the imports.

In template_info(item, date_format), added the following lines:

            secs = calendar.timegm(date)
            date = time.localtime(secs)

Changed the code under # Check for the start of a new day to the following:

            secs = calendar.timegm(newsitem.date)
            date = time.localtime(secs)
            if prev_date[:3] != date[:3]:
                prev_date = date
                item_info["new_date"] = time.strftime(new_date_format,

Changed the first line under to the following:

            date = time.localtime()

Next is to get something in config.ini to select a timezone other than UTC or the server's timezone.
